2016 3TU.NIRICT Community Day

The 2016 community meeting of 3TU.NIRICT, the 3TU.Netherlands Institute for Research on ICT, offers an interactive and diverse program on joint educational efforts, national ICT developments and our initiative for ICT leaders of the future.

Following last year’s Community Meeting, this year’s agenda features three main topics:

  • Influence of technical universities on the national ICT agenda.

Which themes are important. Does 3TU.NIRICT currently support the right (research) topics? How does 3TU.NIRICT relate to the Knowledge and Innovation Agenda 2016-2019 and the National Science Agenda?
  • Sharing best teaching practices and content.

How can we optimally make available for our students (through lectures) the different technical expertise at the three technical universities? What best (and worst) practices exist? How can we improve the balance between gain and pain in joint & shared lecturing? And how can the fun in (following) remote lecturing be increased?
  • Debate with ICT Next Generation.

Over dinner a group of rising young faculty talent will engage in discussion with the 3TU.NIRICT Community over topics that are close to their heart.

EIRICT Symposium on Cyber Physical Systems

Cyber-Physical Systems have emerged over the last decade and have become a growing field in technical science. It evolved from the realization that communication, computation and control become intertwined, penetrate the physical world and become a part of it.

CPS has been a special interest group within EIRICT with a series of informal meetings. An STW per-spectief programme has started from within this community and several other European initiatives have started or are on their way. The TU/e community has strong connections with the high-tech industry in the region, but also with European institutions (e.g. EIT ICT Labs).
This symposium provides a podium for these collaborations.

    TU/e, Zwarte Doos.

More information, program and registration will follow soon.

    Annual 3TU.NIRICT Meet-Up

After leading NIRICT for nearly 10 years, Peter Apers (UT) has recently been succeeded in his role as Scientific Director by Inald Lagendijk (TUD). Furthermore, the Board of the 3TU federation has granted NIRICT an annual coordination budget of 150 k€, and a total of 2 M€ for the collaborative Big Software on the Run (BSR) project.

The deans of the participating faculties at TU Delft, University of Twente, and TU Eindhoven, and the (former) management team members have discussed and agreed upon the next NIRICT planning cycle (2015-2018) with the following activities and strategy:

    • Community building, as so to strengthen the mutual awareness, collaboration, and mobility and to engage senior ánd junior ICT researchers in the national and European ICT R&D ecosystem.
    • Education collaboration, as so to mutually benefit from local expertise and to jointly design and push forward the continuous renewal of education programs, for instance in the area of ICT entrepreneurship.
    • Research portfolio management, with the ambition to (a) scout emerging research themes and investigate relevance to ICT research; (b) to grow fertile areas and ecosystems of new ICT research through collaborate projects similar in size and budget to BSR; (c) to transfer maturing research fields to the research community.

We will discuss the opportunities of the strategic NIRICT activities, and the growing areas of research such as BSR, Big Data, and Human-Technology Interaction. Also the current set of emerging research themes will be addressed, with ample opportunity to launch and obtain coordinating funding for new emerging ICT research themes.
We invite you to participate in the annual NIRICT Community Meet-Up on December 9, 2014.
The Meet-Up will take place in Karel V in Utrecht, doors open at 10.30 and ending at 17.30 with drinks.

    Cyber-Physical Systems Summer School

The summer school on Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) will focus on ways of applying the currently available S&P techniques in design, analysis and deployment of CPS in everyday life and business activities. The goal is to provide multi-disciplinary knowledge and skills on CPS. Targeted participants are Master and PhD students, researchers and engineers of the relevant disciplines.
The school will be organised in two main sessions. The first week will introduce challenges on the following themes: embedded systems, (networked) control systems, wireless sensor networks, and computer science. Frontal lectures will be followed by specific tutorials and group work in order to let the students connect theory with practice. The students will interact with one another, and will start focusing on team work for drafting a project proposal on the introduced thematic challenges. Study-visits to the EIT-ICT Labs Node of Trento, associated companies, selected enterprises and start-ups are under consideration.
The second week will focus on acquiring the skills for preparing a business plan and the corresponding pitch presentations on one or combination of the introduced challenges. This session of the school will be accompanied with interactive teaching and tutoring on both business and technical aspects. Each student group will work on a business case and develop a project proposal on an ICT application (product or service) for one of the particular challenges presented in the first week. Through team work, students will also perform market studies, analyze competitors, and explore social and usability aspects of the proposed application. Finally, each student group will jointly present its project to an evaluation panel.
